What you'll accomplish
You'll have Claude set up with a custom prompt template that drafts OEM-quality warranty claim narratives (3 C's format) in under 2 minutes, instead of spending 15-30 minutes writing each one from scratch. For a tech doing 5+ warranty jobs per week, this saves 1-2 hours of uncompensated time every week.
What you'll need
Go to claude.ai in your browser. Click "Sign up" and register with your email address. Verify your email when prompted. You'll land on the main Claude conversation screen: a simple text interface with a message box at the bottom.
What you should see: A clean chat interface with a text input box that says "How can I help you?"
Troubleshooting: If Claude's site is slow, try during off-peak hours (evenings/weekends). The free tier works fine for this. You don't need Claude Pro.
You're going to create a template you use every time. Copy this template and save it somewhere you can access quickly: your phone's notes app, a sticky note, or a bookmark. This is the core of your warranty claim workflow:
Write a professional warranty claim narrative in OEM 3 C's format (Complaint, Cause, Correction) for the following repair:
Vehicle: [year/make/model, engine size]
Mileage: [mileage]
Customer Complaint: [what the customer described]
DTC Codes: [list all codes]
Tests Performed: [what you tested and what you found — include specific measurements]
Repair Performed: [exactly what you replaced, removed, or adjusted]
Parts Used: [part numbers if known]
Final Verification: [how you confirmed the repair resolved the complaint]
Write each section in professional technical language appropriate for an OEM warranty submission. Be specific and measurable.
Open Claude and paste your filled-in template. Here's a complete example to test with:
Write a professional warranty claim narrative in OEM 3 C's format for:
Vehicle: 2022 Chevrolet Equinox 1.5T AWD
Mileage: 22,450
Customer Complaint: Engine light on, rough idle at cold start
DTC Codes: P0300 (Random Misfire), P0301 (Cylinder 1 Misfire)
Tests Performed: Performed cylinder balance test — Cylinder 1 showed -6.2 mg/str. Performed injector return flow test — Cylinder 1 injector flow 15% low of spec. Compression test all cylinders within spec.
Repair Performed: Replaced Cylinder 1 fuel injector per GM TSB #22-NA-168
Parts Used: 12696986
Final Verification: Cleared codes, performed 15-minute cold start drive cycle, no misfire activity, fuel trim within ±2%, no codes returned.
What you should see: Claude will return a properly formatted three-section narrative with Complaint, Cause, and Correction written in professional language. The output will be specific, measurable, and OEM-submission quality.
Highlight the Claude output from "Complaint:" to the end of the Correction section. Copy it (Ctrl+C or tap-hold → Copy). Open your OEM warranty portal (Ford OASIS, GM GlobalConnect, FCA StarCenter, etc.). Navigate to the claim's narrative field. Paste.
Troubleshooting: If the OEM portal has a character limit, ask Claude to "Shorten this warranty narrative to under 500 characters while keeping the key technical details." The AI will condense it without losing the essential information.
As you get faster, you can shorten what you type into Claude and still get great output. For example:
Short input: "P0420 Cat efficiency 2019 Accord 2.4L. Freeze frame shows lean short term fuel trim. Upstream O2 normal response. Downstream O2 switching (should be lazy). Replaced cat conv. Cleared codes, ran monitors complete, no reoccurrence."
Claude will expand this into a full, professional narrative. The more you use it, the shorter your inputs can be while still producing quality output.
For electrical/DTC repairs: "Warranty narrative 3 C's: [vehicle], [DTC], customer complaint [symptom]. Tested [what you tested]. Found [specific measurement or failure]. Replaced [part]. Verified [how confirmed]. Professional OEM format."
For noise/vibration repairs (no DTC): "Warranty 3 C's: [vehicle] [mileage]. Customer complaint: [noise description]. Road tested confirmed. Performed [diagnostic test]. Confirmed [finding]. Replaced [part]. Post-repair road test: noise absent."
For software/programming repairs: "Warranty 3 C's: [vehicle]. Customer complaint [symptom]. No faults stored. Found [condition]. Performed software update per TSB [number]. Verified [outcome]."
For return/repeat complaint: "Warranty 3 C's for a comeback: [vehicle]. Previous repair [what was done before]. Customer returned with same complaint. Performed additional diagnosis: [what you found this time]. Root cause: [actual cause]. Repair: [what fixed it]. Verified [outcome]."
For multi-code jobs: "Warranty 3 C's: [vehicle]. Multiple codes: [P-codes]. Customer complaint: [symptoms]. Diagnostic sequence: [what you tested in order]. Root cause: [primary cause]. All secondary codes are [upstream/downstream effects]. Repair: [what you did]. Verified no return codes after [test drive]."
