What you'll accomplish
You'll have a free, personalized ASE study system using ChatGPT that quizzes you in the exact style of the ASE exam, explains what you got wrong, and focuses on your weak spots. No prep course or study book required.
What you'll need
Identify which ASE test you're preparing for. Common codes:
Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation. Begin with this setup prompt:
I'm preparing for the ASE [test code, e.g., A8 Engine Performance] exam. I have [X years] of experience and I'm [strongest/weakest] in [topic areas].
Please act as my ASE exam tutor. When I ask for a quiz, give me questions in the exact style and difficulty of real ASE exam questions — four answer choices, one best answer. After each quiz set, show me my score and explain any I got wrong.
Start by quizzing me on [specific topic, e.g., fuel systems] with 10 questions.
What you should see: ChatGPT will generate 10 multiple-choice questions with four options (A, B, C, D) that mimic the ASE format: scenario-based, technically precise, with plausible wrong answers.
Type your answers (e.g., "A, C, A, B, D..."). ChatGPT will grade your answers and explain any you got wrong, including why the other options were incorrect. This explanation is often more valuable than just knowing the right answer.
What you should see: Your score and detailed explanations for any missed questions, including the reasoning behind why each wrong answer is wrong, not just why the right answer is right.
After your first quiz, ask ChatGPT to focus on what you missed: "I missed questions 3, 7, and 9. Give me 5 more questions specifically about [those topics]."
You can also be direct about your weak spots: "I've always struggled with oscilloscope waveform analysis. Give me 10 questions focused only on that."
Beyond quizzing, use ChatGPT to explain concepts you find confusing:
Standard quiz session: "Quiz me on ASE [test code] with 10 questions in the style of the real exam. Focus on [specific topic]."
Concept explanation: "Explain [concept] in plain terms and give me a realistic diagnostic scenario where this concept matters."
Weak area drilling: "I missed [topic] questions on my last quiz. Give me 15 more questions specifically on this topic, ranging from easy to hard."
Full mock exam: "Give me a 50-question mock ASE [test code] exam covering all topic areas proportionally. Grade it at the end and identify my three weakest areas."
Learning from past mistakes: "I got a question wrong about [specific topic]. Explain the correct reasoning and give me 5 more similar questions until I understand it."
